Welcome to my new blog! My name is Tanya Hill aka the Southern Creole Linguist.
I know many of you are wondering what is a Southern Creole Linguist?
I will gladly break this concept down for you.
- I currently live in Memphis, TN (Southern).
- I was born and raised in the suburbs of New Orleans, LA where I lived until 2007 (Creole).
- I currently teach English as a 2nd Language in a traditional public school where I teach the structures, patterns, meaning and all the beautiful nuances of the English Language to 3rd graders (Linguist).
Side Note: Many people confuse Louisiana Creoles with Cajuns. Cajuns are the descendants of the
Acadian exiles from the Maritime provinces of Canada and currently reside in the southwestern part of LA and in southeastern, TX. Louisiana Creoles are descendants from the inhabitants of colonial LA during the period of both French and Spanish rule and immigrants from Haiti, Italy, Germany and Ireland.
Louisiana Creoles live in New Orleans and neighboring parishes in the southeastern part of Louisiana. Now that you know the difference between Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns (a personal pet peeve of mine), I will explain why I began this blog.
The intent of the blog is to pen the abstract random thoughts swirling around in my head daily, hourly and sometimes minute by minute! My passion for teaching English Language Learners propelled me
into teacher leadership. Along with teaching my wonderful students, I also train other teachers on how to accommodate this special population into their classrooms.
Total transparency: I am a blogging newbie! I am learning as I go! This is how I approach everything.
I take the plunge and figure things out along the way! Such a “North” personality! Please join me in
